Innovating for a sustainable environment

At Idrabel, innovation lies at the heart of our mission. In partnership with universities, laboratories and industrial stakeholders, we develop pioneering biotechnological solutions to address today’s and tomorrow’s environmental challenges. Our goal: to create high-performance processes that respect the planet.

BIOFLOC

Towards a natural alternative to petrochemical flocculants

Partners: HELMo, Celabor srl | Funding: Win2Wal Program (SPW – Wallonia)

Objective:

Replace synthetic flocculants used in wastewater treatment plants with a 100% bio-based and biodegradable bioflocculant.

Why?

Petrochemical flocculants are toxic and unsustainable. BIOFLOC upcycles agri-food waste to produce an efficient, eco-friendly bioflocculant that complies with European standards.

Benefits:

  • Fully biodegradable and non-toxic

  • Easy to use in wastewater treatment plants

  • Enables agricultural reuse of sludge

PFAS-BLASTER

A sustainable solution against “forever chemicals”

Partners: IBA, Haemers Technologies, ULiège, UNamur, SWDE, SPGE | Supported by: GreenWin and MecaTech Clusters

Objective:

Develop an innovative and eco-friendly method to eliminate PFAS from water and contaminated activated carbon.

Why?

PFAS are ubiquitous in industry and extremely persistent. This project combines low-temperature thermal desorption, electron beam technology (Rhodotron®) and biological treatment for complete depollution.

Benefits:

  • Complete large-scale PFAS destruction

  • Massive reduction in CO₂ emissions

  • A competitive and sustainable industrial solution

LIFE SEDREMED

Towards a natural alternative to petrochemical flocculants

European partnership: This project is supported by the EU LIFE Programme, in collaboration with several research institutions and industrial partners.

Objective:

Biologically decontaminate polluted sediments from ports and water bodies.

Why?

Sediments in ports and lagoons accumulate pollutants from industrial and maritime activities (hydrocarbons, heavy metals, microplastics). Traditional mechanical dredging is costly and damages aquatic ecosystems.

Benefits:

  • Avoids the negative impacts of conventional dredging

  • 100% natural and non-toxic process

  • Restoration of aquatic biodiversity
